Im Februar 1888 übersiedelte Vincent van Gogh von Paris nach Arles. Er malte dort unter anderem im Bordell der Stadt. Seine Pariser Malerfreund Emile Bernard besuchte van Gogh in Arles; eines seiner Bilder zeigt den Freund in der Schankstube des Hauses. Im Vergleich zu den farbenfrohen Aquarellen aus der Rue de Moulins dokumentieren die Bilder von van Gogh und Bernard ein typisches Kleinstadt-Bordell in der französischen Provinz

In February, 1888 Vincent van Gogh moved from Paris to Arles. He painted there, among the rest, in the brothel of the town. His painter's friend Emile Bernard visited van Gogh in Arles; one of his pictures shows the friend in the tavern of the house. In comparison to the colorful watercolors of the Rue de Moulins the pictures of van Gogh and Bernard document a typical provincial town brothel in the French province.
