Ein Rundgang durch die Kurtisanen-Ausstellung / 1

Galerie Tremlays / Tremlays Gallery

A walk by the courtesan's exhibition / 1

Raum 1: Lobby: Vom Warten zur Verführung

Room 1: Lobby: From the waiting to the seduction

Room 1, the lobby, introduces in the subject of the exhibition. The society-critical heliogravure "Satan semant l'ivraie" (Satan sowing tares) of Félicien Rops sows. A wicked sower throws his disastrous sowing over Paris: prostitutes, fallen ill with syphilis. It must be assumed that about 1880 up to ten percent of the Paris urban population had fallen ill with syphilis, a result of the big magnitude of prostitution at that time.

Since 1804 brothels were permitted in France; the instep width reached from the easy sailor's dosshouse up to the respected establishment which offered luxury for the well-to-do men. Since the end of the 1880s it pulled more and more painters in the accommodations at the Rue de Moulins and the Rue de Amboise to hold on the brothel life artistically. Special documentary value have the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec who took a room in a brothel in 1893/94 as an inhabitant to treat his morbid long-term erections. Two of his pictures show waiting prostitutes in the lobby of their establishment.

Which ideal images stood behind it, points out the confrontation of these both pictures to the painting "The decadence of the Romans" from Thomas Couture of 1853, a historicizing imagination world which shows the wishes of most brothel visitors figuratively.

On the rear wall there hangs Edouard Manet's painting "Un bar aux Folies Bergère". With Manets model Suzon the visitors receive information about the arrangement of the exhibition and a room map.
